Halftone Generator — a free WebGL tool

Challenge

Designers often need a convincing halftone effect for posters, social graphics or packaging mock-ups. Typical options are a heavy desktop filter or an online tool that uploads your image to a server.

Approach

The generator renders everything on the visitor’s device with a WebGL shader: the image is sampled per screen cell, the dot size follows the local tone, and a second ink can be offset to imitate plate misregistration. Nothing is uploaded.

Details

  • Adjustable cell size, screen angle, dot shape, contrast and colours, with ink presets
  • PNG export at the original resolution and SVG export of the dots for vector work
  • Keyboard-accessible controls with visible labels
  • The same rendering idea powers the visual language of this site

Result

A free tool that is useful on its own and shows the web development and design side of the work in one place.
